Adult language learning, by contrast, may have an aspect of (acculturation): adding a culture, or at least becoming identified with a new social group. For those who don't welcome it, this can be a trying experience. After taking up residence in a foreign country, for example, many persons are known to suffer from (culture shock), a result of which is profound longing for the homeland and for things of the homeland. Later, with success in learning the second language, they may feel (anomie), alienation from even their own culture, and, eventually, a resulting feeling of culturelessness and isolation.
